Game Summaries & Headlines.
On eighth grade night, the Middle School Lions soccer escaped a scare from Vonore Middle School to complete an undefeated regular season and clinch the number one seed going into the postseason tournament.
He first half of the game belonged to the Lions, who came out strong. After several near misses, quick back and forth between Anders Deets and Harrison Schwall in the box was just too much for the keeper as Harrison put it cleanly in the net in the 23rd minute. CCS’s second score followed just three minutes later as Kayden Sherritze crossed it in to Paul Pifer who scored.
Halftime featured a brief program led by Coach Nathan Koepfer honoring the team’s eighth graders at their last regular season home game: Kayden Sherritze, Army Eckles, Harrison Schwall, Jaewon Lee, River Bailey, Jude Goldenberg, Paul Pifer, and Jake Baldwin.
Vonore and CCS both switched lineups coming into the second half, changes that ultimately favored Vonore. VMS found the net for the first time in the 48th minute, and with less than five minutes in the game rang up the tying goal. On Vonore’s next possession, their striker drew a foul in the penalty box.
With the team’s lossless record on the line, CCS keeper Shep Gaston took his place to defend the PK. Shep guessed the correct side as the Vonore shot flew just above the crossbar.
Try as they might, CCS couldn’t score in the last minute left, leaving the game in a 2-2 tie at the end of sixty minutes.
While they had of course hoped for a win, the tie left the Lions with an admirable 8-0-2 record, an undefeated regular season. The Lions, by avoiding a loss, also clinched the #1 seed in the tournament.
With a bye in the first round, the Lions appear next at home in the second round of the tournament on Thursday, April 25.
